How prominent is your Social Media presence?

Before you start throwing your name out there on applications, here’s another question worth asking:

How visible are you online—especially on social media?

In the world of overemployment, stealth matters. One of the fastest ways to get flagged is a high-profile, high-activity social media presence – especially on LinkedIn.

The quieter your digital self, the safer your overemployed self.

Why Social Media Visibility Matters

Overemployment thrives on discretion. The more you post, tweet, share, or go viral, the easier it becomes for someone—coworkers, managers, recruiters, even bots—to connect the dots.

If you’re active on LinkedIn every day, engaging in public debates on X (Twitter), or posting updates about your “latest project” on Instagram, you may be drawing unwanted attention—even unintentionally.

Self-Audit: How prominent is your social media footprint?

Ask yourself:

  • 👤 Is your real name easily searchable with your job titles or employers? Especially if you have a very unique name originating from a non-English language.
  • 💼 Are you active on LinkedIn—liking, commenting, posting regularly, and trying to make more connections?
  • 📸 Do you post about your work or career changes on public platforms?
  • 🧠 Do your usernames match across accounts (i.e., easy to link)?
  • 🔍 Have you Googled yourself lately to see what’s public?
  • 🗣️ Are you known for having a strong public voice or online persona?
  • 🧵 Have you ever casually mentioned juggling multiple gigs online—even jokingly?

If you answered “yes” to most of these, your digital footprint may be too loud for overemployment—unless you take steps to dial it down.

When to Go Incognito

You might want to pause your overemployment plans—or scrub your profiles—if:

  • You’re a frequent LinkedIn poster or “thought leader”
  • You’re known in a tight industry circle where news spreads fast
  • You use your full name on social platforms and often link to your job(s)
  • You post work screenshots, client wins, or status updates online
  • You’re actively building a personal brand tied to your day job

How to Quiet Your Digital Presence

Want to fly under the radar without deleting everything?

  • Switch your LinkedIn to private viewing mode or archive it completely
  • For peace of mind, consider turning your private social media outlets to viewable only by your closest friends
  • Change who can search you up on social media outlets (like who can add you on Facebook)
  • Avoid engagement farming (likes, comments, reactions)
  • Avoid posting during work hours or about work at all
  • Consider deleting or archiving old posts that mention multiple jobs or side work

Visibility Is a Choice, So Make It Strategically

In the world of overemployment, your online presence is part of your operational security. Every post is a breadcrumb. Every like or comment, a potential signal. So before you go live with a second job, ask yourself: is my digital self quiet enough that no one will know?
